A good constructive relationship on a personal level, as between V. Putin and G. Schröder, could help solve problems, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday. V. Putin and G. Schröder have proven this many times when G. Schröder was still in office. “It helped to solve the most difficult issues (…),” said D. Peskov, quoted by Russian news agencies.

G. Schröder previously stated that he could imagine that his friendship with V. Putin could contribute to ending the war in Ukraine. “We have been cooperating intelligently for many years. Maybe it could still help to find a negotiated solution, I don’t see another one,” said the former chancellor in an interview with dpa.

V. Putin met with G. Schröder in Moscow after the invasion of Ukraine. The German politician called Russia’s invasion of the neighboring country a “fatal mistake”, but he did not renounce his friendship with V. Putin. Mr Schröder is in favor of new mediation efforts at the government level and believes that France and Germany should take the lead.

Kremlin representative D. Peskov emphasized that today he does not see the desire of political actors to end the conflict. Germany under the leadership of Chancellor Olaf Scholz is said to be heavily involved in the war. In Europe, according to D. Peskov, the prevailing attitude is to “provoke Ukraine to fight until the last Ukrainian”. According to him, Moscow monitors various positions in Europe, but does not see the situation changing.
