The Polish portal “Wirtualna Polska” is surprised to report that Lithuania has given up its new tanks. The Government of Lithuania is considering changes to the plan for defense contracts. As reported by the Lithuanian media, the possibility of postponing the purchase of tanks is being considered in order to acquire air defense systems sooner.

in 2024 At the beginning of 2008, there were reports that the Lithuanian government had started negotiations with Germany, expressing interest in Leopard 2A8 tanks. In order to create an armored battalion, the Lithuanians had tentatively planned to purchase 54 new tanks. However, Minister of National Defense Laurynas Kasčiūnas expressed the opinion that it would be better to postpone such purchases (or at least aim for a smaller number of tanks), and use the released funds to strengthen anti-aircraft defense.

Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis holds a similar opinion. In his opinion, air defense needs to be strengthened not only in Lithuania, but also throughout NATO, and, of course, on the eastern flank of the Alliance. Such an opinion is perceived as a lesson learned from the war in Ukraine, where the lack of air defense systems of the defending army greatly facilitates the situation of the Russians.

“Investment in air defense would best meet our own needs and those of our allies who need it most now.” Tanks can wait, but air defense is needed today”said Gabrielius Landsbergis.
