China continues to aim for 2027. to invade Taiwan, according to John Aquilino, head of the US Indochina-Pacific Command. The official emphasizes that Beijing is increasing defense spending despite economic problems, Defense Romania reports.
China is working “on a scale not seen since World War II” to build a strong military.
John Aquilino recalls that during his three years in office, China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) commissioned more than 400 fighter jets and more than 20 large warships.
But the most worrying aspect of Beijing’s military preparations is that from 2020 China’s nuclear arsenal has practically “accelerated”. China has doubled its stockpile of ballistic and cruise missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads.
“All indications are that the Chinese military will carry out the order of President Xi Jinping and by 2027 will be ready to invade Taiwan”said Aquilino, quoted by Bloomberg.
As for conventional forces, “China’s military activity shows it is capable of sticking to the president’s timetable for reunification with Taiwan through the use of military force if called upon,” said John Aquilino, commenting on China’s alleged plans to attack.
China’s military is also rehearsing various tasks related to operations against Taiwan, such as simulating the encirclement of the island through a naval and air blockade, according to the commander of the Indochina-Pacific Command.
