Spanish prosecutors are seeking two-and-a-half years in prison for disgraced former soccer manager Luis Rubiales, who is on trial for kissing Spain midfielder Jenni Hermoso on the lips against her will, court documents showed on Wednesday.

Prosecutors also want Mr. Rubiales, who is accused of sexual assault, to pay at least 50,000 euros in compensation to Mr. Hermoso, according to a document sent to a Spanish court, a copy of which was seen by AFP.

In the incident on August 20, after Spain beat England to win the Women’s World Cup final in Australia, Mr Rubiales grabbed Ms Hermos’s head with both hands and forcibly kissed her on the lips.

The kiss was broadcast live on television to the world, causing widespread outrage and prompting FIFA to suspend it.

At the time, Mr Rubiales called it a “voluntary” kiss on the lips, but Mr Hermoso, 33, said it was not.

Under Spanish law, a kiss without consent can be considered sexual violence, a category of crime that includes all cases of sexual violence.

L. Rubiales “grabbed the player’s head with both hands and suddenly, without the player’s consent or consent, kissed her on the lips,” according to the document filed by prosecutors.

Realizing that the kiss could have “personal and professional consequences” as he was suspended by FIFA on August 26, Mr Rubiales and his entourage began putting “constant pressure” on Mr Hermoso to “publicly justify” the kiss as voluntary.

The pressure caused her “anxiety and severe stress” for months, the document says.

Prosecutors are asking that the 46-year-old man be jailed for one year for the kiss and another 18 months for the coercion charge.
