The Dieselgate scandal, which began almost a decade ago, when researchers discovered that diesel-powered cars in real traffic emit tens of times more pollution than in laboratories, is still ongoing. This time, the German prosecutors decided to allocate 100 million. A EUR fine for the automotive industry giant Continental.

According to a statement from prosecutors, the company was fined for failing to prevent its employees from participating in a diesel emissions fraud scheme.

The company produced at least 12 million engine control units used by automakers, including the Volkswagen Group, to manipulate emissions data. The software installed on these devices had the ability to falsify pollution data.

“It was this software that caused the vehicles in which it was installed to emit more nitrogen oxide during normal driving than allowed by law,” German prosecutors investigating the case testified.

Continental emphasized that it decided not to contest the fine. The fine was calculated based on the assessment that after selling the engine control units, the company received 95 million. EUR profit. According to Continental, the company should not feel a significant financial burden due to the decision of the prosecutors, according to Automotive News Europe.

Prosecutors will continue to pursue the investigation, which includes about 40 people associated with Continental. This year did not start very well for Continental. The company was rocked earlier this year by raids linked to allegations of cartel and price-fixing. In the past, the company has been attacked by cyber hackers and has also faced problems with product quality.
