The event was attended by former Euro negotiators Antanas Valionis and Petras Auštrevičius, as well as politicians, diplomats, civil servants, experts and other persons who significantly contributed to this step.

Congratulating them, Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė emphasized that Lithuania’s independence was restored on March 11 and its promise – a successful democratic Lithuania – could only be fulfilled thanks to Lithuania’s membership in the EU and NATO.

“Lithuania is not yet and will probably never be perfect, but probably most of the nations of the world would have something to be happy about if they only solved the problems that we solve in our everyday life. I think that before the curtain of the unknown at the dawn of independence, we would have chosen without hesitation what we have achieved and have now, which is why the motto of this memorable year is justified: 20 years of success,” the Prime Minister said in a statement.

According to her, preparation for EU membership meant a lot of purposeful work, not always popular reforms.

“This celebration was conceived as a tribute to all of you,” said the Prime Minister, addressing the guests of the event who contributed to the implementation of Lithuania’s aspiration to become part of the EU. – It’s our time and a job well done. As an opportunity to say “Thank you” to everyone. I’m so glad you came. I wish to enjoy the daily expression of my meaningful work.”

The guests of the event were introduced to the art installation specially created for this occasion in the Government House and the musical work of the composer Matas Drukteinis marking the 20th anniversary of EU membership.

On April 27, Saturday, all visitors registered for the open event will have the opportunity to see the installation and hear the piece.

At Friday’s event, the Prime Minister’s thanks were also given to the winners of the contest “Lithuanian Membership in the EU and NATO: 20 years of success” organized by the Government Chancellery.

Lithuania became an EU member on May 1, 2004.
