Moscow said on Monday it would strike UK military targets in Ukraine and elsewhere if Ukrainian forces use London-supplied long-range missiles to strike Russia.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry announced it had summoned Nigel Casey, the UK ambassador in Moscow, and warned him that Russia’s “response to Ukrainian strikes using British weapons on Russian territory could be any UK military facility and equipment inside and outside Ukraine.”
“The ambassador was urged to reflect on the inevitable catastrophic consequences of such unfriendly steps by London and to immediately strongly and unequivocally refute the belligerent provocative statements of the head of the Foreign Ministry,” the statement added.
David Cameron, the UK foreign secretary, said in an interview last week that Ukraine has the right to strike targets in Russia.
He also said London had no reservations about how Ukrainian forces would use UK-supplied weapons.
Russia previously announced it was planning nuclear weapons drills, claiming it was in response to “threats” from Western leaders, including French leader Emmanuel Macron.
Russian forces currently occupy several regions of Ukraine, which the Kremlin claims to have annexed and that they are part of Russian territory.
Neither Ukraine nor the West recognizes these annexations.
