Akvilė Mišeikienė, who has been working in the Šiauliai County Police for twelve years, transferred part of her professional sphere to another sphere of her life – concern for the ecological environment. The official took up the interests of future generations by protecting nature from waste and helping people to replace plastic sealing means with sustainable, reusable ones.

The senior investigator of the group of community officers of the Šiauliai city and district police commissariat decided to start by removing plastic from the household. The official became interested in ecology and sustainable consumption five years ago, after the birth of her son. Along with it, the responsibility for its future was born, the desire for the future generation to live in the least polluted environment. This prompted Akvilė to abandon household plastic as much as possible and start making beeswax canvases. It is a great alternative to the plastic cling film that is often used in the kitchen. The beeswax cloth is reusable, suitable for use even for several years. It has antibacterial properties, so food covered or wrapped in it stays fresh longer.

A. Mišeikienė got to know beeswax edible cloth five years ago, when her friends living in England brought her a waiting room. Since the need for film in the household is everyday, the woman tried to master its production technique and make the canvas herself. Especially since Akvilė’s father is a beekeeper. When the needs of the family farm were met, the beeswax canvases made by Aquilė were received by her friends and acquaintances on various occasions. And the acquaintances of the latter, having learned about the existence of such a tool, flooded with requests to make organic food packaging tools for them as well.

“This canvas is not difficult to make,” says Akvilė. “The most important thing is that, over the years, the canvas can be successfully renewed and continued to be used.”

The community official devotes a lot of time to improving the technique of making beeswax canvas, and the very process of making the canvas is a meditation for her: the house is filled with honey, it reminds her of childhood and grandparents. In addition, it helps to relax from the service full of all kinds of emotions. And, of course, it gives moral satisfaction that you can contribute to the creation of a sustainable environment with your own hands.
