The state-owned Lithuanian Railways Group (LTG) and Ukrainian Railways have agreed to develop an international intermodal freight transport route through the territories of Ukraine, Poland and Lithuania.

The companies officially signed the memorandum, which agreed to coordinate the project and allocate the necessary measures and resources for its implementation, LTG announced on Monday.

We see Ukrainian and Ukrainian railways as our strategic partners in ensuring smooth cargo movement both between us, and in providing export and import opportunities through the port of Klaipeda between Ukraine and Scandinavia. We strongly support Ukraine in its quest to develop alternative logistics solutions and increase the competitiveness of both businesses in the region, said Egidijus Lazauskas, head of LTG Group, in a statement.

It is planned that the first test flights of the route will be carried out next year. In the future, it is intended to carry cargo on a regular basis.

LTG and the Ukrainian oil companies also agreed to analyze the market potential, prepare the necessary technological and operational solutions and a specific action plan to ensure the proper implementation of the route.

Last May, LTG and Ukrainian railways agreed to cooperate in implementing the Free Rail program initiated by LTG, a memorandum was signed in Munich.

Last November, LTG Cargo, LTG Group’s freight company, also tested semi-trailers for transportation between Kaunas and Kyiv.
