The Russian occupiers from the units of the Leningrad Military District are forming the Northern Forces Group, which will carry out operations in the direction of Belgorod and Kharkiv.

Analysts of the Institute of Military Research (ISW) report this in their report. They are convinced that the Kremlin does not have enough forces to capture Kharkiv or Sumy.

In their analysis, experts cite Ukrainian military observer Konstantin Mashovets, who said that the occupiers continue to transfer the newly formed military units of the 44th Army Corps (AK) in the Leningrad Military District (LVO) to the Northern Forces Group.

From May 3 the Russians transferred the personnel and equipment of the 30th Motorized Rifle Regiment and the 128th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade to the Northern Force Group.

According to K. Mašovets, units of the 30th motorized rifle regiment were first redeployed to the Kursk railway station, and then moved further to the Belgorod region to go to concentration points near the Kharkiv region.

He reminded that the occupiers have recently intensified air, drone and missile strikes in the northeastern border regions of Ukraine, such as Chernigov, Sumy and Kharkiv regions.

However, at the same time, K. Mašovec repeated ISW’s preliminary assessment that Russia’s Northern Group of Forces is unlikely to be able to organize a successful offensive operation to capture Kharkiv.

The expert hinted that elements of Russia’s 11th Army Corps, 44th Army Corps and 6th Army Corps (all LVO) may continue to attempt limited offensive operations or conduct cross-border raids in the Kharkiv and Sumy regions.

Ukrainian officials are increasingly warning of the threat of a possible future Russian offensive to capture Kharkiv. However, the Russian army does not have enough forces to take the city. At the same time, Russia’s offensive operations in Kharkiv and Sumy will distract and shift the attention of the defense forces from other, more important sectors of the front,” explains the Institute of Military Studies.
