The head of the Pulmonology and Allergology Center of Santaras Clinics of Vilnius University Hospital, pulmonologist professor Edvardas Danila said that tuberculosis is a global problem. Scientists estimate that approximately one-third of the world’s population is infected with tuberculosis mycobacteria.
Especially many people are sick with tuberculosis in Lithuania. As Professor E. Danila said, among the 35 countries of the European Union and the European Economic Community, Lithuania has the second highest incidence of tuberculosis.
“This is a very poor indicator. The incidence of tuberculosis in Lithuania is approximately three times higher than the average of European Union countries. This shows that, unfortunately, this problem is not solved in our country,” the doctor stated.
March 24 is the aforementioned World Tuberculosis Day. On that occasion, Professor E. Danila explained in more detail how tuberculosis is transmitted, how it develops, what are its symptoms, and why some people develop this disease, while others can be carriers of the pathogen, but do not get tuberculosis all their lives.
