April 1 the municipality decided not to wait and share the good news with Vilnius residents: the tram project was approved. Vilnius residents have been waiting for this public transport for many years. This decision is the municipality’s response to the growing population and the lack of public transport alternatives.

On Wednesday, the first good news reached the people of Vilnius – the number of routes will be increased in Vilnius, and 44 routes will become more frequent. Vilnius residents will see these changes in 2026 or 2027. At the same time, the implementation of the tram project should begin.

True, the project has not yet been published. Why the plans were shared during the holidays is not clear, probably it was decided to give the residents even more good emotions.

April 1 the information that appeared is a real surprise. After all, the mayor himself mentioned many times that currently Vilnius does not need a tram and it could be a matter of the future. However, the increasingly frequent complaints of Vilnius residents about public transport forced them to change their minds and start this project now.

The works should start in exactly two years, ie on April 1, 2026.
