G. Meloni’s far-right party “Brothers of Italy” (it. Fratelli d’Italia) won the Italian general election in 2022.

With Meloni at the top of the list, the Italian brothers will look to capitalize on their national popularity in the European Union. However, EU rules prohibit winners who hold the post of Prime Minister from serving in the EP.

“In Europe, we want to do exactly the same thing that we did in Italy on September 25, 2022 – to create a majority that would gather the forces of the right and finally send the left into opposition, even in Europe!”, said the Italian Prime Minister.

In a speech on Sunday, Meloni praised her coalition government’s year-and-a-half record for what she said were efforts to fight illegal immigration, protect families and defend Christian values.

She later announced that she had decided to run for the EP.

“I am doing this because I want to ask Italians if they are satisfied with what we are doing in Italy and what we are doing in Europe,” she said, arguing that only she can unite Europe’s conservatives.

“I am doing this because I am not only the chairman of the “Italian Brothers”, but also the leader of European conservatives who want to play a decisive role in changing the direction of European politics,” added G. Meloni.

Elections to the EP will be held on June 6-9.
