The reconstruction of Atgimimo Square will start

There are no obstacles left for the reconstruction of Atgimimos Square – the contract for the contract work has been signed. It is expected that the works will start in the summer, first of all, detailed archaeological research will be carried out, the installation of the retaining wall, foundation piles, other underground structures, the further installation of the underground site and finally the maintenance of the above-ground part.

“After many years of discussions, planning and other preparatory work, various obstacles, the implementation of the Atgimimo Square project is finally starting. I am glad that in the central part of the city, instead of the abandoned space that is a shame for the city, we will have a modernly arranged square, and at the same time, the parking issue in this part of the city will be solved. This is a complex project, but I hope that all challenges will be overcome by pooling the experience and strength of municipal specialists and contractors”, says Klaipėda Mayor Arvydas Vaitkus.

According to the project, the square must be as easily accessible as possible from any access points, a multifunctional accent will be created in the center of the square, on the plane of which the Klaipėda historical map project will be displayed, around which an amphitheater is planned. The spaces of the square will be able to be divided into zones for different needs – open-air cafes and various gatherings could take place. In the square, a darker color coating and background lighting of the pavement, contrasting with the main accent, are planned. The green areas are designed by replicating the places of the former construction, by installing green hills in them. It is also planned to install a two-story underground parking lot, which will accommodate 231 cars. The underground parking lot is also important for the Klaipėda State Music Theater located next to the square – after installing additional spaces, the parking situation on Danė and other streets in the central part of the city will improve.

A 30-month deadline has been set for the reconstruction of the Renaissance Square and the installation of an underground parking lot. The reconstruction works of the square will be carried out by the closed joint-stock company “Infes”, which won the public procurement tender announced by the municipality. The value of the contract is 21 million. euros.

The tender for the reconstruction of Atgimimo Square had to be announced three times. The first two tenders were terminated at the initiative of potential contractors. The municipality took into account the comments received, adjusted the procurement documents and announced the tender for the third time. The third tender was appealed by two participants to the court, it was demanded that the conditions of the tender be recognized as illegal and the tender be terminated, but the lawsuits were rejected in court, which allowed the successful completion of the procurement procedure. A total of 5 bids were received in the third tender.
