March 28 – the last day by which candidates must collect at least 20,000 voters’ signatures. Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė, who is once again trying her chances in the presidential elections, Gitanas Nausėda, who is seeking a second term in office, the parliamentarian Remigijus Žemaitaitis, who is notorious for his anti-Semitic remarks, and the chairman of the Labor Party, Andrius Mazuronis, have already done so.

As reported by the CEC, on Thursday the candidate nominated by the Freedom Party Dainius Žalimas, the representative of the Democratic Union “For Lithuania” Giedrimas Jeglinskas, the “peasant” Aurelijs Veryga, the independent candidates Ignas Vėgėlė, Eduardas Vaitkus, Gintautas Kniukšta and Valdas Tutkus are going to present their signatures to the commission. It has not been announced when another independent candidate, Arūnas Rimkus, will submit his signatures to the commission.

Presidential candidates collected signatures both on paper and electronically. True, I. Šimonytė, nominated by conservatives, collected signatures of supporters only online.

After receiving the signatures presented by the applicants, the CEC will check them together with the information specified in the candidates’ application documents and make decisions to register the candidates to participate in the elections. This will have to happen no later than April 11.

The Lithuanian presidential election will be held on May 12, 2024.
