“This is the first time in history that a pontiff will participate in the work of the G-7,” she said, adding that Pope Francis will participate in an exit session for invited participants of the Group of Seven industrialized nations meeting in Puglia.

Pope Francis, 87, has sought to influence the development of artificial intelligence by calling for a global treaty to ensure the technology is used ethically.

Mr Meloni said it was “very important to take advantage of the best ethical and intellectual thinking that is being developed in this field”, and praised the Vatican’s research, which aims to “put into practice the concept of algoretics, that is, to make algorithms ethical”.

According to her, the participation of Pope Francis would be “a decisive contribution to the establishment of a regulatory, ethical and cultural framework for artificial intelligence”.

Concerns about artificial intelligence have increased since the late 2022 launch of chatbot ChatGPT, a mass-market gateway to generative artificial intelligence.

In December, the pope issued a six-page message warning of the dangers of artificial intelligence, including disinformation and election meddling, as well as the use of artificial intelligence to make decisions — from Social Security benefits to the targeting of weapons — that blur accountability.

He called for a “binding international treaty” to regulate the development and use of artificial intelligence, prevent harm and share best practices.

“We are committed to creating governance mechanisms that ensure that artificial intelligence is human-centered and human-controlled,” Meloni said.

The G-7 summit, attended by the leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, will be held from June 13 to 15 at the Borgo Egnazia Hotel in the southern region of Puglia.
