“The Historical Memory Commission discussed the issue in August and, as we must, it will appear within 10 working days. The applicants were informed that the Historical Memory Commission did not approve the construction of the monument. I can assure you that the applicants were informed by the given contacts. Those indicated contacts, which were in the sent statement, confirmed that they received the fact of our disapproval and informed the monastery about it”, said K. Šeraitė-Gogelienė to Eltai.

Therefore, the chairwoman of the commission points out, it can be stated that the monument is built illegally.

“It had to be approved not only by the municipality, but also the Department of Cultural Heritage (KPD) had to approve its construction, because it is the territory of the old town and a public space,” said the chairwoman of the Historical Memory Commission, adding that what will be done next , the decision must be made by KPD.

“There are options here – a fine can be imposed or time allocated to deal with all those permits, or even the removal of the monument. But here the KPD will decide what the penalty can be. The issue is not really closed yet,” said the politician.

On Tuesday, the portal lrt.lt announced that the monument in the courtyard of the Franciscan Monastery in Vilnius, which has attracted attention in the public space, was erected illegally. According to the publication, the builders of the monument did not contact the KPD regarding its appearance, although they should have done so. At that time, representatives of the monastery claim to have spoken with both KPD and the Historical Memory Commission regarding the construction, although they did not receive written consent from either institution.

Representatives of the KPD Vilnius branch told lrt.lt that an administrative procedure is currently being carried out regarding the monument, and the builders may face a fine.
