In March, a car with foreign license plates was stopped for inspection at Erje customs in Norway.
The officers asked the Lithuanian driver how long he spent in Norway. He replied that two days.

The driver also admitted that he had a considerable amount of cash with him, but assured that there was no more money in the car.

During the inspection, two cardboard boxes with packages of diapers were found in the car. In each of them, customs officials found three bundles of Norwegian kroner packed in vacuum bags. A total of 1.4 million was confiscated. crowns (about 118.7 thousand euros). The driver has been arrested, the police have started an investigation.

The purposes of money smuggling can be various: to use cash to pay for illegal goods or to finance terrorism, or to launder it, Norwegian customs officials said.

“Criminal organizations are most interested in profit, so cash seizures deal a strong blow to criminal networks,” explained Eystein Bermer, head of customs.

For this reason, the fight against cash smuggling is a priority for customs.

“The social impact of confiscations is not only to create discontent among criminals, but also to prevent further criminal activities, such as drug trafficking, in Norway. Maybe it was the money received for the sale of drugs,” he added, noting that the blow to criminals in this case was greater than if the drugs were seized before they were sold.
