For the first time, the diplomatic community residing in Lithuania is gathering today at the Tuskulėnai Memorial – here at 3:00 p.m. a ceremony to honor the 1 million massacred in Rwanda (Central Africa) in 100 days 30 years ago will begin. Tutsi.

It is an initiative of the Ambassador of Rwanda to Lithuania, Olivier J.P. Nduhungirehe, and the result of cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania (MFA) and the Genocide and Resistance Research Center of the Lithuanian Population (LGGRTC).

The event will begin with a candle lighting ceremony and a moment of silence. Commemorative speeches will be delivered by Ambassador Vytautas Pinkus, Head of the Global Affairs Group of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Dr. Arūnas Bubnys, CEO of LGGRTC. A short documentary film “Rwanda: from Despair to Hope” will be shown to those gathered, Crescent Juru, a Rwandan studying in Lithuania, will read poems.

Prof. Dr. Justinas Žilinskas, researcher and lecturer at Mykolas Romeris University, international lawyer, specialist in international humanitarian law, blogger, publicist, writer, author of children’s literature [gyvai], prof. Dr. Robert van Voren, founder and head of the Global Psychiatry Initiative – the international foundation “Human Rights to Mental Health”, head of the Andrei Sakharov Democracy Development Research Center at the Faculty of Political Sciences and Diplomacy of Vytautas Magnus University, visiting professor at foreign universities, Sovietologist and Freddy Mutanguha, Aegis Trust, Head of the Kigali Genocide Memorial, representative of genocide survivors.

Olivier J.P. Nduhungirehe, Ambassador of Rwanda to Lithuania, will give the closing speech, summarizing the commemoration. The event will be hosted by Rukundo PACIFIQUE, a Rwandan student at Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, a representative of the second generation of genocide survivors.

The ambassadors or representatives of Israel, France, Italy, Japan, India, Canada, Poland, the United States of America, Armenia, Sakartvel, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Romania, Moldova, Holland, Sweden, Ireland, Croatia, Denmark or representatives of these embassies are planning to participate in the event.
