Seimas member Eugenijus Sabutis once again reminded Energy Minister Dainis Kreivis of the duty to protect consumers from abuse by suppliers.

The parliamentarian appealed to the minister to respond to “a very worrying situation, when independent electricity suppliers are again drastically increasing prices for neither this nor that”.

“At a time when the stock exchange recorded a significant decrease in electricity prices, April 14. recorded the lowest price on the stock exchange since 2018 June, – some independent electricity suppliers in Lithuania suddenly started increasing the tariffs of their fixed plans.

For example, tariffs are being increased by the state-owned company “Ignitis”, as well as by the private company “Elektrum Lietuva”. They say they do so based on the price forecast for the future. This is very strange”, comments E. Sabutis.

The parliamentarian believes that electricity suppliers seek to increase profits by taking advantage of consumers’ ignorance.

“This is a way to hedge against possible future price fluctuations at the expense of consumers. The situation is unfortunate, because after all, a fixed price plan should act as a protection mechanism against price increases, not as a basis for price increases!

It’s not the first time that suppliers have demonstrated the ability to “turn” everything to their advantage”, E. Sabutis wonders.

Addressing D. Kriviš, the parliamentarian reminds the minister of his duty to “form state policy in the field of electricity”.

“With the largest electricity suppliers raising prices again, we must return to the issue of abuse of a dominant position in the electricity supply market.

The Ministry of Energy, together with VERT, should analyze the pricing decisions of independent electricity suppliers. We urge the minister to initiate an investigation and assess the validity of price increases by independent electricity suppliers, to take steps to ensure transparency and fairness in the electricity market. It is also necessary to revise the regulatory system in order to prevent possible abuse of a dominant position in the market”, urges Seimas member E. Sabutis.
