On Thursday, the LNG terminal “Independence”, accompanied by the patrol vessel “Žemaitis”, left the port of Klaipėda and headed towards the Fayard large ship inspection and repair base on the Danish island of Fyn near the city of Odense.

Here, the LNG terminal “Independence” will undergo the necessary technical service, after which the Lithuanian KJP ship will once again undertake the task of escorting the terminal from Denmark to Lithuania, the Lithuanian military announced on Sunday.

There is a Division of Patrol Ships in the Fleet of Lithuanian KJP Military Ships, its tasks are to patrol the territorial sea and exclusive economic zone of the Republic of Lithuania, to arrest violators, to carry out convoy, search, rescue and other operations. One of such operations is to carry out escorting (escorting and protection of civilian ships) tasks. For example, in exceptional cases, KJP ships in the exclusive economic zone of Lithuania undertake to escort gas carriers arriving in Klaipėda with LNG cargo.

Currently, there are 4 Flyvefisken-class patrol vessels (built in Denmark) in the lineup of the Patrol Vessels Division of the KJP Military Fleet: “Žemaitis” (P11), “Dzūkas” (P12), “Aukštaitis” (P14) and “Sēlis” (P15). These ships are armed with Italian 76mm Otto Melara guns, Browning machine guns and MG3s. Some ships are equipped with variable depth sonar, which allows them to detect any underwater objects, determine their exact location and track them, such as submarines.
