Nassar, a former USA Gymnastics team doctor, was sentenced to life in prison for sexually abusing more than 250 athletes, mostly girls and young women. Among his victims were several stars of the US teams that won gold medals in the 2012 and 2016 Olympics.

Despite the complaints, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) initially took no action, and Nassar continued to operate with impunity.

He was eventually sentenced to 175 years in prison in late 2017 and early 2018 for sexually abusing hundreds of young girls he cared for over three decades, including members of the gold medal-winning US Olympic team.

“These allegations should have been taken seriously from the beginning,” Acting Deputy Attorney General Benjamin C. Mizer said in a statement.

“While these settlements will not undo the harm that Mr. Nassar has done, we hope that they will help provide the victims of his crimes with the important support they need to continue their recovery.”
