Environmentalists recorded what the poacher’s catch looked like, with a total of 128 fish caught.
“Two construction nets, 69 sturgeon, 59 bream and one bream were detained. The catch itself is really big and attention-grabbing”, stated Darius Jurevičius, head of Kaunas wildlife protection.
The damage caused to nature this year in Kaunas County is record high.
“Damage to fish stocks was 22,560 euros. A report was drawn up for the person, and a wooden boat with oars was also detained,” D. Jurevičius said.
The entire LNK report is in the video:
It seems that a group of poachers may have been operating here, but when the officers showed up, everyone else was on their feet.
“During the arrest, we noticed that several other persons left, we suspect five, but they were not fishing themselves, apparently they were this person’s bodyguards,” thought D. Jurevičius.
The poacher came to the territory of the strategic facility Kaunas HPP with a wooden boat. Officials of the Public Security Service were the first to see the poachers entering the restricted area.
“Treated as a malicious trespasser and chased, stopped at the disembarkation point.” Everything that was caught illegally was confiscated,” said Marakas Mickievičius, commander of the Kaunas unit of the Public Security Service.
It’s not the first time they’ve tested our vigilance.
The fearless poacher was extremely audacious. The head of the public security service was pointing to the place where the illegal nets were thrown – where it is not only dangerous, but also forbidden to set foot not only for outsiders.
After going down the river, the offender disembarked at the swan feeding place, where he was arrested by the officers.
According to M. Mickievičius, poachers are trying to trick, thinking that no one will notice them.
“To enter such an object and think that there will be no consequences can be added to the list of the most stupid,” M. Mickievičius joked.
Recently, such provocations by fishermen and cases of checking the vigilance of officials have become more frequent.
“Poachers are smart and consider darkness and fog to be their helpers. This is not entirely true – they are visible and recorded. This is not the first case when they check our vigilance”, noted M. Mickievičius.
The arrested poacher faces a fine of 300 euros, as well as compensation for the damage caused to nature – almost 23 thousand. euros.
