After the closure of another important traffic artery in Šilainiai, Vijūkai Street, there were questions about the completion of works planned last year on the Romainiai slope, which would help drivers get home.
According to Aloyzos Pakalniškis, head of the Urban Management Department of the Kaunas City Municipality Administration, the road workers could not complete the retaining wall installation work during the winter, so the work started only this week, when the weather warmed up.
“From Thursday, the workers started forging dowels – special support piles for strengthening the slope. These works are expected to be completed by the middle of May”, commented A. Pakalniškis to the portal “What’s happening in Kaunas”.
The works provided for in the project will be completed and not only two traffic lanes should be installed on the hill in problematic condition, but also sidewalks should be installed.
“Currently, one traffic lane has already been built, and rain collection networks have been installed. It is planned that we will be able to resume traffic in both directions around the middle of June,” he promised.
Earlier, street widening works were hindered by trees growing on the slope, according to the interviewee, “43 trees and bushes were removed according to the project. 8 trees were in bad or critical condition – sick, drying.”
“What’s happening in Kaunas” reminds that the section of Romainiai hill between Šilainiai and Raudondvaris roads was closed on April 3 last year. It was then promised that the work would be completed by the end of last June.
From September 1, 2023, traffic on the so-called “Regitra” slope to Raudondvaris highway will be organized in one direction – from top to bottom.
The contract works are performed by the company “Fegda”, which won the public tender. The total value of the project works is 6 million. EUR with VAT.
