May is the month of late spring, when the transition to meteorological summer occurs. Although there are frosts on the surface of the soil quite often this month, there are usually no more frosts in the air. For example, 29 and 59 years ago, the lowest May was measured in Varėna. the air temperature in Lithuania then cooled down to -6.8 degrees.

Such a low air temperature was caused not only by the retreating cold air mass, but also by the prevailing sandy soils in the area, which cool down quickly at night and the air temperature often drops the most.

In winter or in March, the mentioned temperature would not impress anyone, but in late spring, when the vegetation is already fully green, such cold is a natural meteorological phenomenon that can lead to frostbite of fruit tree blossoms, etc. As you can see on the map, many of the cold records are old.

The oldest (-4.9 degrees) was recorded in Kaunas more than a century ago, in 1900. May 11 1935 was also exceptionally cold. May 2 in the morning

The values recorded at that time still remain unimproved even in four meteorological stations: Klaipėda, Telšiai, Šiauliai and Biržai. In addition, May of that year in Lithuania was one of the coolest in the almost 250-year history of meteorological observations.

The most recent in May. cold records were set in 2007. May 2 even in six main meteorological stations of the country: Laukuva, Raseiniai, Utena, Dūkšte, Kybartai and Lazdijai. May of that year, on average, was even warmer than the long-term norm, and only the turn of April and May was characterized by very cool weather.

Later, the weather gradually warmed up, and the end of May was even very warm. Facts: the last time it was cool for almost the entire month of May was in 2020 – the average temperature reached +10.2 degrees, when the norm is +12.5 degrees. And the coldest month in the entire history of modern meteorological observations was in 1980, when the average temperature was just +7.9 degrees.
