According to her, the meeting with King Frederik X at the residence of the royal family was a great opportunity to thank Denmark for its support to Lithuania during its transition from Soviet occupation and integration into the EU and NATO.

“It is very important for us that in 1991, Denmark, second only to Iceland, recognized the restored independence of Lithuania, restored diplomatic relations in the same year and generally formed an active Baltic policy. And a year earlier, he supported the establishment of the Baltic Information Office – the first institution of its kind for Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia in Western Europe,” V. Čmilytė-Nielsen was quoted as saying in the press release.

According to her, the cooperation between the two countries was strengthened by the first monarch to visit independent Lithuania – Queen Margarita II of Denmark, who was accompanied by her son, the current king of the country, Frederiks X.

Denmark, noted the head of the Seimas, helped Lithuania achieve EU and NATO membership with investments, provided military support, was the first of the Alliance states to conclude a bilateral military cooperation agreement and signed a visa-free regime agreement.

Later on Wednesday, V. Čmilytė-Nielsen will discuss defense cooperation with Danish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Troels Lund Poulsen.
