Military exercises are already taking place around the municipality of Kaunas

“Fortifications are being installed near the municipality, guards are walking around with weapons. The entrance of the municipality is covered with bags, L. Sapiegos st. blockpost”, reported the reader of “What’s happening in Kaunas”.

The news portal “What’s happening in Kaunas” reminds that the citizens of Kaunas should not be afraid – the intensive movement of soldiers, the fortifications being installed near the municipality are visible due to ongoing military exercises.

As previously announced by the Kaunas City Municipality, the component part of the national exercise – “Thunder Bastion 2024” – will take place on May 6-8.

Soldiers and equipment will move intensively in the city, and imitation means (ammunition or pyrotechnics) will be used. The most intensive exercises will take place at strategically important objects in the Centrum, Petrašiūnai, Eigulių and Aleksots precincts.

Together with the state institutions, the soldiers simulate the transition from peace to wartime, preparation for the activities of war commandants, and mutual interaction.

Until May 10 Soldiers of the Ground Forces of the Lithuanian Army continue the exercises in the municipal territories of Kaunas city and Jonava districts. Soldiers use standard equipment and weapons and move in wheeled vehicles. Pyrotechnics, imitation ammunition will be used during the exercise.

On May 7-9, from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., it will be possible to vote in all 60 municipalities. Due to the planned exercises, voting will not be organized in Kaunas city municipality building (Laisvės al. 96).

Kaunas City Municipality Administration Director Tadas Metelionis clarified that military exercises “Thunder Bastion 2024” will take place at the entrances to and inside the municipal administration building, so voters who want to vote in Kaunas will be welcomed at the Vytautas the Great University building (28 S. Daukanto St.) and the Kaunas District Municipality building. (Savanorių pr. 371).

Voters can vote at any early voting location, regardless of where they have declared their place of residence.

As announced by Kaunas municipality, from May 7 10 p.m. until 8 in the evening 5 o’clock morning curfew will be introduced in Palemons micro-district, Petrašiūnai ward.

In this exercise, the soldiers will practice the interaction between the police and the commando unit. It is noted that the movement of residents will not be restricted, but any transport may be stopped and checked.

The citizens of Kaunas are asked to remain calm, to comply with the requests and instructions of soldiers or other officials.
