S. Alvarez sent J. Munguia to the first knockdown in his career and confidently won by decision of the judges

On Saturday at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, something professional boxing has never seen before took place: two Mexican fighters fought for the title.

33-year-old Mexican boxing legend Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (61-2, 39 knockouts) successfully defended the IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO “super” middleweight titles (up to 168 pounds or 76 kg) and by unanimous decision of the judges (117-110, 116-111 and 115-112) defeated his 27-year-old compatriot Jaime Munguia (32-1, 34 knockouts).

The contender for the title started the fight a little better and pressed S.Alvarez against the ropes of the ring, but in the fourth round, the champion sent J.Munguia to a knockdown with a left “hook” and a right blow from the bottom, which was the first time in his career.

Since then S. Alvarez looked a bit sharper and although Mr. Munguia had moments when he tried to pressure his opponent, S. Alvarez looked very confident and no pressure scared him.

S. Alvarez continued to be more accurate in the second part of the fight, he defended better against his opponent’s blows, and when the last gong sounded, no one doubted that S. Alvarez would celebrate the victory.

S.Alvarez hit 234 punches in this fight, while J.Munguia – 170.

Since S. Alvarez in 2022 lost to Dmitriy Bivol by decision in the upper weight category in May, he had surgery on his left hand and won four straight victories over Gennady Golovkin, John Ryder, Jermella Charlo and now J. Munguia.

S. Alvarez fought against a compatriot for the first time since 2017, when he met Julio Cesar Chavez.

Mr. Munguia last fought in January of this year, when he defeated John Ryder by technical knockout.
