Residents’ activity in the fight against online fraudsters is growing, according to the aforementioned center, the center receives 40-50 reports per day. NKSC information, residents receive messages from online scammers through various channels, such as e-mail. by mail, text messages, through social networking platforms and messaging apps, by phone.

“Fraudsters usually pretend to be postal and parcel services, VMI, SODRA, police, banks and other organizations that provide daily services to residents and usually send short messages to them. We recommend that all seniors talk about it with relatives, relatives, and neighbors after receiving strange messages. You should also take your time to perform the actions mentioned in the message and wait for at least a few hours. Per day, conscious citizens submit 40-50 messages to the NKSC, as mentioned, so there is a chance that a few hours after receiving the message, the opportunity to connect to the fraud site indicated in the message will no longer be available, because it will already be blocked,” the NKSC explained, adding , if the content of the message is similar to the real one, it is recommended to connect to the website of the service provider after collecting the website address of that service provider through a browser, but do not click on the link in the message.

7,000 inhabitants are protected per day

According to the NKSC, the NKSC currently protects more than 7,000 residents on average per day, who do not recognize the message sent by fraudsters and try to connect to websites designed to extort money or sensitive data.

The center emphasizes that after receiving an SMS message, you should additionally notify your mobile operator about it, so that they block the mobile phone number used by the fraudsters and they can no longer use it to send fraudulent messages. After receiving a fraudulent “iMessage” or RCS message, you should additionally report it by using the functions of blocking such messages and reporting spam in the app. If the fraudulent message could not be recognized and you entered your payment card or bank login details on the fraudulent website, you should immediately report it provide details of the fraudulent website to your bank, the police and the NKSC website.

Websites are blocked using the tool “DNS Firewall” created by NKSC. According to the Communications Regulatory Authority, at the end of 2023, the protection of “DNS Firewall” was applied to almost 4 million people in Lithuania. mobile and 775 thousand users of fixed internet connection services.

How to protect yourself from cybercriminals

Don’t talk to strangers. Avoid talking and sharing information with someone you don’t know in real life.

Be careful when you receive an unexpected request. Don’t share any of your data and remember – your bank or other service provider will never ask for your passwords via text message.

Nothing in life is free. Free cheese – only in mouse houses. The same is true online. Don’t be fooled by an offer that sounds too good to be true.

Be alert when asked to take action quickly. Don’t give in to the pressure to act “here and now”.

Protect your data. Passwords, credit card numbers, personal identification data are very valuable. Treat them as your property.

Think before you click. Before clicking on a link, verify its authenticity. Hovering over the link should check where the link actually leads.

Better to be safe than sorry. Always use different and strong passwords. Enable two-factor or multi-factor login authentication for your accounts.

Make life difficult for criminals. Always check for possible updates on your devices, have backup copies of important information, do not use your work email address for personal purposes.
