A few months ago, Viktor was working for a farmer when an accident happened – a metal fragment injured the finger of his right hand. In Šilutė hospital, the man received emergency help, doctors diagnosed a fracture.

The doctors plastered the finger and sent Viktor home. However, the pain in the hand and the lump that appeared did not give the man peace. March 20 he underwent an X-ray examination again at the same Šilute hospital.

“Took a picture. I have documents, it is written in black on white that there is a fracture, an unhealed bone”, – lrytas.lt Victor said.

According to him, it turned out that the accident resulted in two fractures, one of which healed, while the second one was not seen by the doctors who provided emergency care.

However, as the man complained, he was not given help this time. “No one plastered, plastered and continued to look,” said Viktor.

The problem is that the family doctor is on vacation. Therefore, there is no one to write a referral to a secondary specialist, the man explained.

“I called the Šilute hospital. He said that one doctor has a lot of patients, there are no referrals to an orthopedist-traumatologist. What should I do next? We get an offer to go in all four directions,” said Viktor, who was caught in a difficult situation.

“How much pain can you take?” he added, explaining that he turned to the media for help out of desperation.

“Horror is that hospital,” stated the interviewer.

Hospital: to be decided by the family doctor

Comment on the situation lrytas.lt applied to Šilute hospital. Its representatives indicated that the consultation of a radiologist of a secondary level doctor at the Public Hospital Šilute was given to the patient in accordance with the referral issued by a doctor working at the primary health care center (PSPC).

When asked why in this case the patient was not referred for further treatment after the additional examination, the representatives of the hospital indicated that after receiving the conclusions of the radiologist, it is not he who decides on the necessity of issuing a referral for further specialist consultations, but the doctor who referred the patient for examination.

“If the patient needs his consultation during the family doctor’s vacation, the patient must contact the primary health care center to which he is registered. During the leave of the family doctor, the patient must be given the opportunity to receive a consultation with another (substitute) doctor.

April 3 at 8 a.m. according to the data, which is also published on the pre-registration portal esveikata.lt, there were no waiting lines for traumatologists at VšĮ Šilutė hospital. Patients could choose from 161 free registration times with five trauma doctors,” the medical institution’s comment states.
