The Vilnius Public Health Office “Vilnius svieviau” announces that in 2024 April 2 due to the transfer of air pollutants from the south (dust brought from the Sahara desert), the pollution of solid particles (KD10) increased in Vilnius. Exceeding the daily limit value of KD10 was recorded at the air quality research stations of Vilnius Žirmūnai, Lazdynai, Senamiesti and Savanorių.

in Lithuania from March 31 increased air pollution with particulate matter KD10 is observed. Today, air quality remains poor throughout Lithuania – not only in cities, but also in rural areas, high and very high PM are recorded10 concentrations. According to meteo.lt information, the wind direction will change from south to west today. The polluted air mass will be displaced by fresher air from the west, so the air quality in the country is likely to improve in the second half of the day.

Office specialists remind us that due to its small diameter, KD10 particles easily enter and accumulate in the lungs, causing coughing and sneezing. Especially worsens the health of people who suffer from asthma, bronchitis. The greatest risk is for seniors, children, residents with cardiovascular and respiratory system diseases.

Recommendations for residents in case of increased air pollution in the urban environment:

  • residents, especially the elderly, children, pregnant women and those suffering from allergic diseases, chronic diseases of the respiratory and circulatory system, should be outdoors as little as possible, avoid walking near busy streets and intersections;
  • it is recommended to avoid active physical activity outdoors (sports, work outdoors), especially for the elderly, children, pregnant women and those suffering from allergic diseases, chronic respiratory and circulatory system diseases;
  • protect the respiratory tract by wearing personal protective equipment – FFP2 or FFP3 respirators (with or without valves). According to Chinese and United States occupational safety and health standards, N95 and N99 type respirators are also suitable;
  • close the windows tightly; if possible, it is recommended to ventilate the premises with an air conditioner with filters;
  • it is recommended to close the windows tightly when driving;
  • use a wet cleaning method to clean surfaces where dust accumulates (floor covering, windowsills, curtains, carpeting, televisions, computers and their monitors);
  • consult a doctor if you feel unwell.
