The leaders of the Alytus district municipality regularly receive requests from residents to install a pedestrian crossing in the very center of the city of Simnos, at the most important objects of the ward on Vytautas Street. This road belongs to “Via Lietuva” (the former Directorate of Motor Roads of Lithuania), therefore, taking care of the safety of the residents, this institution was officially approached with a request to install a pedestrian crossing.

“Due to this particular request from the residents, we visited Simne with municipal specialists several times, we monitored the situation and it was confirmed. On Vytautas street, the most important and most frequently visited objects of the city are located next to each other – the old town, cultural center, synagogue, post office, police station, shops. People cross the carriageway on a very busy street with heavy lorry traffic, thus endangering themselves and the safety of traffic. We have realistically assessed the need for the crossing, its most appropriate location, and now we are waiting for a decision from “Via Lietuva”, which owns this section of the road. We hope that the requests of residents and the municipality will be taken into account,” said Alytus District Municipality Vice Mayor Aurims Truncė.

At the end of last week, the mayor of the municipality, Rasa Vitkauskienė, wrote to “Via Lietuva” and asked, taking into account the circumstances, to install a pedestrian crossing on road no. 181 Seirijai–Simnas–Igliauka 21,099 km.
