The Klaipda Regional Waste Management Center (KRATC) is going to officially announce the start of food waste collection in the port city on Tuesday.

As reported by KRATC, the Food Waste Processing Workshop built next to the Dumpi weigh station will also be delivered.

We are preparing semi-poem and antem containers in the courtyards of Klaipda apartment buildings. Until now, their brown roofs were locked, but now the fuses have been removed, food waste, packed in plastic bags, can be thrown away. We distributed close to 2,000 special brown 60-liter containers to individual property owners, says Roma Budrien, director of the waste management center in the Klaipda region.

According to EU requirements, from year one all Lithuanian municipalities must collect food waste separately.

Food waste has been collected in the capital since the beginning of the year, but the procedure has been criticized because residents collect waste in special bags that are thrown into common containers. According to critics, this is how the use of plastic bags is growing, although Europe is trying to change this.

Algirdas Reipas, head of the regional waste management center in Alytus, where this waste has been collected for several years, previously stated that the container collection method is considered the only sustainable method of food waste management, providing 90% efficiency.
