As reported on Tuesday by the State Border Guard Service (VSAT), on Monday morning the border guards stopped the Lexus NX 300h SUV in Kalvarija Municipality to check it.

A 44-year-old man from Kaunas was driving a car coming from Poland with British license plates. The driver, who presented his personal documents to the border guards, said he had returned to Lithuania from the United Kingdom.

The driver explained that he bought this car on lease in Great Britain three days ago.

During the inspection, officers became suspicious of the authenticity of the vehicle identification number (VIN).

It turned out that the fake VIN was masking an authentic number. After removing the VIN sticker from the windshield, another identification number was found.

After checking it through the Interpol database, the border guards received an answer that the British police had been looking for this car as stolen since March 30.

The driver explained that he bought this car on lease in Great Britain three days ago, and that he does not know anything about the fake VIN.

The VSAT officers brought the SUV driver to the Kalvarija border checkpoint and interrogated him there.

The remand measures for the Kaunian are a written promise not to leave and collection of documents.

For such a criminal act, the Criminal Code provides for a fine, restriction of liberty, arrest or deprivation of liberty for up to six years.
