The Seimas appointed V. Mitala as a member of the NSGK committee – Respublika.lt

“Having received an appeal from the Freedom faction to delegate its faction’s representative to the National Security and Defense Committee, the Council of Elders approved the relevant quota this morning. I propose to adopt a Seimas resolution by which Vytautas Mitalas would become a member of the NSGK”, said Seimas Vice-Chairman Jurgis Razma during the meeting.

92 members of the Seimas voted for the proposal, there were no votes against, 4 MPs abstained.

Previously, V. Mitala worked in the Budget and Finance Committee (BFK).

Vytautas Mitalas, the new leader of the National Security and Defense Committee of the Seimas, from the Freedom faction, joined the opposition’s proposal to temporarily suspend the committee’s work until the decision of the Special Investigation Service (STT) on whether to open an investigation into public procurement in the field of national defense is received.

The ruling party has a majority in the committee, so if V. Mitala had decided to participate in the meetings, the meeting would have taken place.

“I really think that the findings of STT will help to answer many questions that are being asked now. Yesterday, at the Anti-Corruption Commission, we discussed this whole issue, and it was said by the pre-trial investigation authorities that those answers will be available soon. Analogously, we at the Anti-Corruption Commission have made a decision to hold another meeting when the conclusions are confirmed, and to decide whether or not to form a temporary investigative commission,” V. Mitalas said to Eltai.

“It is not clear which of the NSGK members that shadow has fallen on. It’s definitely possible to wait,” he added.

The politician confirmed that the conservatives of the Seimas proposed to the committee to choose the new chairman before receiving the conclusions of the STT.

The elder of the Freedom faction emphasizes that issues related to public procurement in the field of national defense should be discussed in the coalition as well.

ELTA reminds that the former chairman of NSGK, Laurynas Kasčiūnas, was appointed as the Minister of National Defense.

On Thursday, the conservative faction of the Seimas decided to nominate former army commander Arvydas Pociu for the post of chairman of the National Security and Defense Committee (NSDK).

The proposal is to be decided on Thursday.

ELTA reminds that A. Anušauskas submitted his letter of resignation to the Head of the Government in mid-March. Later, after meeting with the president, A. Anušauskas admitted that he had received an unexpected offer from the head of the government to leave the position of the minister of national defense to another politician, and to take his position as the chairman of the committee in the Seimas. A. Anušauskas testified that he refused such a casting.

On the same day, the Prime Minister also provided more information about the changes in the Government. According to her, the resignation of A. Anušauskas is related to the expectation to do “even more and faster” during the remaining term of the Government.
