According to him, the fire broke out in the territory rented by “Lietuvos geležinkeliai”.

The extinguishing work may last until the morning

After calling the contacts listed on the company’s website, its representative refrained from commenting and asked to call later.

“It seems that extinguishing the fire may take longer, because there is a pile of various metal with certain parts several meters higher, where open fire is being started,” PAGD representative Donatas Gurevičius told BNS.

According to him, the fire extinguishing work will take place overnight, until Thursday morning.

Vilnius County Police representative Julija Samorokovskaja confirmed to BNS that traffic is closed on Panerių Street due to the fire.

In some places, increased air pollution is recorded

Some time ago, the municipality recommended residents to close windows, temporarily turn off recuperation systems, and also avoid being in open spaces.

The Department of Environmental Protection (AAD) told BNS that the fire is not localized, so it is not possible to enter the place and examine what is burning.

“A manhole in the sewage system has been plugged to prevent firefighting water from entering the city’s sewage system,” the AAD said.

According to him, the laboratory of the Environmental Protection Agency was called to the scene to take air and sewage samples, and simulations of the spread of air pollution are being made.

The agency stated on Facebook that it records high pollution on Savanorių Avenue.

“Concentrations of other pollutants were low. No increase in pollutant concentrations was recorded in other Vilnius OKT stations,” wrote the Environmental Protection Agency.

NVSC recommends distance education to nearby institutions

In the event of a fire in Vilnius, on Panerių Street, the National Public Health Center (NVSC) recommends that nearby educational institutions continue the process remotely.
