Did Lithuania really suffer from the dirty atomic bomb detonated in Ukraine?

All of Western Ukraine (and not only) became a radiation zone after the dirty atomic bomb detonated in Khmelnytskyi. Lithuania also received a good amount of radiation.

A lie. The so-called dirty atomic bomb was never detonated in Ukraine, so neither this country nor its neighbors and Lithuania received any dose of radiation.

A post appeared on the social network claiming that a dirty atomic bomb was detonated in Khmelnytskyi, Ukraine, in May 2022. It is said that Lithuania also received a dose of radiation then, and the whole of Western Ukraine is still a radiation zone, but agricultural products are grown there, which also come to Lithuania.

All this is a lie, because Russia started talking about the fact that Ukraine could detonate such a bomb in the fall of 2022, and in May 2023, reports poured in from Russia that on May 13-14, warehouses with depleted uranium ammunition exploded in Ternopil and Khmelnytskyi and there was a radioactive cloud travels to Europe. It was stated that the level of radiation has increased in Lithuania as well.

This was immediately denied by the Radiation Protection Center. He issued a press release stating that misleading information is being spread on social networks and the media about a purportedly powerful explosion in the Khmelnytskyi region, Ukraine, which caused the release of radioactive materials into the air and an increase in the level of ionizing radiation (radiation).

“Radiation safety specialists constantly (24/7) monitor the radiation background in Lithuania, which has not changed and residents have no reason to worry. We would immediately inform the responsible institutions and the population about any imminent danger related to the spread of radioactive materials in Lithuania and provide recommendations on the application of protective measures”, the Radiation Safety Center (here) stated in its report.

Authorities in Ternopil and Khmelnytskyi denied information about the explosions of depleted uranium ammunition. May 15 The head of the state administration of the Ternopil region, Volodymyr Truš, stated that no ammunition exploded and emphasized that there are no environmental problems in the city. Rumors about the danger of radiation were also denied by the Khmelnytskyi city council. Local authorities have stressed that there are no deviations from normal radiation levels in the region (here).

In October 2022, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu started calling the defense ministers of different countries to warn them that Ukraine was preparing to use a dirty atomic bomb. Analysts of the US Center for Military Studies are then convinced that in this way Russia is trying to stop or slow down military aid to Ukraine (here)

Ukraine immediately responded to S. Shoigu’s calls. Its Government has written to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Its head, Rafael Grossi, soon announced that it was sending inspectors to two sites in Ukraine that Russia said were hosting activities related to the possible production of “dirty bombs” ( here ).

Soon, in the first days of November 2022, TATETA announced that it had found no evidence that Ukraine was producing the so-called dirty bomb. IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said in a statement that “a technical and scientific assessment of the results so far has not revealed any signs of undeclared nuclear activity and material” at the sites the agency has inspected ( here ).
