Sergej Karelin, who worked for the Associated Press (AP) news agency, is the second journalist to be arrested on such charges. On Saturday, Russian authorities detained Konstantin Gabov, who used to cooperate with the Reuters news agency.
“The Associated Press is deeply concerned about the detention of Russian video journalist Sergei Karelin,” the agency told AFP. “We are working to get additional information,” the AP added.
The press service of the Russian judiciary reported on the Telegram channel that Gabov, who, according to media reports, also worked for the Russian television channels Moskva 24 and MIR and the Belarusian news agency Belsat, will be held in custody until at least June 27.
The representatives of the courts indicated that S. Karelin and K. Gabov are accused of helping to prepare videos that were to be published on the YouTube channel “NavalnyLIVE”, a platform used by A. Navalny’s team.
A. Navalny, the most prominent critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, died under unclear circumstances in a prison in the Arctic region in February.
Russia labels the movement he leads as “extremist” and its workers and supporters face criminal prosecution.
