It will not yet be a full return to the king’s official duties, but the palace says these are already positive signals.

The king will start his activities next Tuesday with a symbolic trip to a cancer treatment center.

His summer plans include a state visit where he will receive the Emperor and Empress of Japan.

He will make more external commitments in the coming weeks, according to the House. The king is said to be “highly encouraged” to return to more public engagements.

The king’s treatment, which began in February, is reportedly still ongoing and no end date has been set.

According to representatives of the Chamber, it is too early to say how long the treatment will last. They added that doctors were “very encouraged by the progress made so far and are positive about the King’s continued recovery”.

The type of cancer was not disclosed, but the royal medical team are said to be “reasonably satisfied with the progress made so far and believe that the king can now resume public duties”.

It is still unclear whether he will attend some of the big events on the calendar, such as Trooping the Colour, D-Day commemorations, summer garden parties, Royal Ascot and autumn trips abroad.

Decisions will be made based on medical recommendations in the near future.
