US President Joe Biden’s administration has revoked export licenses allowing Intel and Qualcomm to supply semiconductors to Chinese tech giant Huawei.
According to Financial Times (FT) sources, the US Commerce Department’s move will affect the supply of chips for Huawei laptops and mobile phones.
The Commerce Department confirmed to the FT that it had “revoked certain export licenses for Huawei”, but did not specify which US companies would be affected.
“We are constantly evaluating how our controls can best protect our national security and foreign policy interests in light of the ever-changing threat landscape and technology landscape,” a department spokesman said. “As part of this process, as before, we sometimes revoke export licenses.”
Washington already imposes tough restrictions on U.S. technology sales to Huawei, but Republican lawmakers have urged President Biden to crack down on the Chinese company, which national security officials say helps Beijing conduct cyber espionage around the world. Huawei denies these claims.
