A photographer in Jerusalem learned to become invisible

“Jerusalem: Mea Shearim” exhibition of photographs by Gregory Kaplan was held at the Samuel Bak Museum. “The first time I visited Mea Shearim, an ultra-Orthodox neighborhood of Jerusalem, I felt as if I had entered a different world: in this civilization, which lives by its own rules, the boundaries of the present time dissolve. I shoot with Nikon, I’m a single photographer, my works are small stories that I hope are interesting not only to me.”

According to him, people’s characters and feelings emerge on the background of frozen time as a stage – characteristic of melodrama, and sometimes of comedy or tragedy. Strangers are not welcome on the streets of Mea Šearim, so the photographer sometimes has to become invisible.

“I fell in love with Gregory’s photographs as soon as I saw them: great composition, unexpected moments, special atmosphere, individual, sensitive look of the author. All this distinguishes these photographs from others, makes them valuable”, said the curator of the exhibition, artist Aleksandra Jacovskytė.

G. Kaplanas was born in 1952 in Vilnius, as he says, one of the most photogenic cities in the world. He dreamed of studying art history, but fate decided to become a civil engineer.

He now lives in Israel. For him, the promised land is an inspiring photographic object: colorful scenes, rich texture, unique light.

“The images of the Dead Sea, the Negev desert, and Jerusalem captured my imagination, I feel the need to take pictures constantly,” the artist admitted.

The Jubilee Enamel Biennale presents only masterpieces
