Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov explained to the TASS news agency on Thursday that “any steps in this direction will not increase Poland’s security and the relevant objects (…) will be the most important in our military planning.”

S. Riabkov warned that NATO’s joint nuclear missions near the Russian border are destabilizing Russia’s security. He added that Moscow is closely monitoring how “various Polish executive authorities discuss this topic in their domestic political discourse.”

S. Riabkov was reacting to the comment of the Polish President Andrzej Duda, published by the newspaper “Fakt” on Monday, that Poland is ready for the deployment of nuclear weapons on its territory under NATO’s nuclear weapons sharing program, if the Alliance so decides.

Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said on Thursday that “the possible extension of the nuclear weapons sharing program to NATO’s eastern flank is for the Allies to decide, so it is advisable to exercise restraint on this matter.”

The NATO program envisages sharing the Alliance’s nuclear deterrence mission with members that do not have warheads. The treaty says that this is not the proliferation of nuclear weapons.

According to this policy of sharing nuclear weapons, NATO since 2009 November deploys US nuclear weapons in Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey.
