Paveway IV: What kind of weapon is it?
The Paveway IV is a British-made 230 kg aerial bomb with laser and GPS guidance systems. The bomb also has a function to explode at a certain height.
This weapon is a combination of an electronic guidance system and a modified Mk 82 general purpose bomb with increased penetration.
Paveway IV has a modification specifically designed to destroy fortified bunkers. This bomb replaced the old 910 kg Paveway III anti-bunker bomb used by the British Army.
Weapon Systems/Bomb Paveway IV
The bomb is said to be routinely fitted to standard British Harrier II, Panavia Tornado and Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets. It can also be launched from the latest American fighter jet, the F-35.
There is no evidence of any attempt to use these bombs using Soviet-style fighter jets in the Ukrainian Armed Forces. It is noted that the Ukrainians found a way to use the Storm Shadow previously transferred by the British from their existing old-generation aircraft.
In theory, this bomb can also be used with F-16 planes, which will soon be delivered to Ukraine. Paveway IV bombs are also known to have been used during the US and UK winter strikes against the Houthi movement in Yemen.
