Elections cannot be held under wartime conditions, but Mr. Poroshenko has made it clear that he plans to start campaigning as soon as they can be held. But before that, Ukraine must win against Russia, he said.

“This war is not only about Ukraine. It is related to world order, freedom, democracy, P. Poroshenko said. “We are here to fight and save the world.”

Poroshenko, who heads the largest opposition party, said an alternative plan could be to campaign for a seat in the European Parliament when Ukraine joins the European Union.

Mr. Poroshenko served as president for five years, and during the elections in 2019. lost to Volodymyr Zelenskyi. According to the Constitution, the presidential election was supposed to be held on Sunday, but it did not happen. Polls show that the Ukrainian public does not approve of elections being held under wartime conditions. Zelensky’s term will officially end on May 20, but the Constitution allows him to continue in office until the next elected president takes over.

It seems that Russia intends to use this situation for propaganda purposes. On Tuesday, the head of the Right Russia for the Truth party, Sergej Mironov, stated that after May 20 V. Zelenskyi will allegedly become a dictator. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has previously said that after this date, Moscow will no longer need to talk to V. Zelensky.
