Exactly 40 years ago, an extremely rare event was heard in the world of football – a brutal fight between players of two famous teams. After the final match of the Copa del Rey held at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, the players of Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao got into a fight.

The future conflict was brewing for many months – it was in 1983 that Bilbao team player Andoni Goikoetxea broke the ankle of Catalan club striker Diego Maradona.

In 1984, both teams met in a match in which there was no lack of rude episodes or provocations. However, the referee did not dare to take strict measures and showed only 7 yellow cards, and Athletic players again “hunted” D. Maradona and tried to get the sniper out of the lineup with fouls.

After the match ended with a 1:0 victory for the Bilbao club (Endika 14′), real chaos began on the field – unable to withstand D. Maradona and his companions began to educate the rivals who tried to triumph.

After the fight was brought under control, the Argentinian and his teammates were escorted to the locker room by the police. It was later announced that the striker was suspended for three months, and the Catalans decided to sell the star to the Italian club Napoli, where he later shone in the brightest colors.
