In a pastoral statement, the Catholic bishops of the United Kingdom do not recommend medical and social gender reassignment.

Following the Vatican’s recent declaration on human dignity, the Catholic bishops of England and Wales condemned medical and social sex reassignment and called for a “sensitive” response to it in a pastoral reflection published on Wednesday.

The Vatican’s doctrinal office strongly opposed it gender ideology, stating that “all attempts to obscure the reference to the ineradicable gender difference between men and women are rejected”.

The Catholic bishops of England and Wales followed the Vatican’s lead on April 24. in the statement “Intricately Woven by the Lord”, which calls for pastoral care to be based on “the acceptance of the body as it is created”.

“We cannot promote or support body-damaging reconstructive or medicinal medical interventions,” they wrote. “Nor can we legitimize or support a way of life that does not respect the truth and vocation of every man and every woman called to live according to the divine plan.”
