Linas Sadeckas, head of Luminor bank’s fraud risk management department, talks about how this tool works and how to protect your money from people who use it.

What is FraudGPT

Artificial intelligence is a system that can perform tasks that normally require human intelligence. It can understand naturally spoken language, make decisions, learn from experience. However, according to the expert, it can also be used to commit crimes.

FraudGPT is an AI chatbot similar to the more popular ChatGPT. Both apps create realistic and consistent content based on user request. The difference between the two is that when asked to generate fraudulent content, ChatGPT will refuse to do so, which is unfortunately what FraudGPT was designed for. Therefore, financial criminals can take advantage of this bot and create convincing messages, forcing them to take actions that we would not normally take,” says the expert.

According to L.Sadeck, today “FraudGPT” is able to create fraudulent e-mails. letters, prepare phone messages, extremely realistic websites – this is how the user is persuaded to disclose personal information or their financial data.

With the help of FraudGPT, fraudsters can also create fake documents, invoices, payment requests, fraudulent messages. Careless clicking on the links or attachments contained in the latter may infect the user’s devices with malware.

How to protect yourself and your money from FraudGPT

According to L. Sadeck, the first step to financially protect yourself from FraudGPT is to develop as much skepticism as possible for unusual reports.

“While FraudGPT is developing content and may sound like a distant threat, it is likely that we will encounter it more and more.” Get in the habit of seriously questioning any unexpected request for information or money, even if the source seems trustworthy at first glance. Check them on official websites and through direct contact methods,” advises the bank’s representative.

In addition, certain anomalies can be observed in fraudulent texts that indicate attempts to cheat – these can be grammatical errors or unusual terms, because artificial intelligence is not yet advanced enough to intuitively avoid such cases.

Another tip to protect yourself from FraudGPT threats is to educate yourself on the latest artificial intelligence tools.

“A fairly simple way to get to know artificial intelligence tools is to try them yourself. Of course, this should be done carefully, not to disclose personal information and similar data. However, after seeing in practice how the previously mentioned “ChatGPT” works, you will more easily recognize the content generated by it or other similar software”, says the expert.

Also, L. Sadeckas advises, never disclose information about your internet bank logins, passwords or other confidential data to anyone. If you suspect that you have encountered fraud, report it to the police on the “ePolice” portal, by calling 112 or by visiting the nearest police station.

“And if you’ve experienced a suspected fraud related to banking, or you’ve exposed your online banking logins or passwords, also contact your bank as soon as possible. By urgently reacting to a possible threat, you can help not only yourself, but also others,” says L. Sadeckas.
