At least seven senior Iranian officers were killed in Damascus on Monday when Israeli warplanes struck the Iranian embassy compound in the Syrian capital, according to a statement from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, which said “The New York Times” publication.
The strike on the embassy killed three generals of Iran’s Quds Force, the external military and intelligence arm of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and four other officers, the Quds Force said.
It was one of the deadliest attacks in the year-long shadow war between Israel and Iran.
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said on Tuesday that Israeli airstrikes on the Iranian embassy compound in Damascus, Syria, which killed three top Iranian commanders, would not go unanswered.
Government supporters took to the streets and called for retaliation against Israel.
Meanwhile, Iran has already appealed to the UN to discuss the embassy attack in the UN Security Council.
