Mayor Antanas Pocius congratulated those gathered on an important anniversary for Lithuania.

“Joining the European Union has become a fateful event in the history of our country. The head of the municipality emphasized that membership in the European Union not only strengthened our country economically through investments, but also inspired us to foster European values - togetherness, respectful neighborhood policy, tolerance for different points of view, reduction of social exclusion.

The festive mood was lifted by the pieces performed by the “Aukštyn” brass band orchestra of the Naujamiestis Cultural Center-Art Gallery.

The head of the orchestra, Remigijus Vilys, introduced Piet Visser, a faithful cultural cooperation partner of the Panevėžys district municipality, fosterer of orchestral music, pedagogue, conductor, educator, who is participating in the event.

“Our friend Piet from the Kingdom of the Netherlands came to us when Lithuania was not yet a member of the European Union – in 1995. He worked, taught, and created with our orchestras all that time, so he saw not only the progress of our musicians, but also a renewing, growing and beautifying country,” said R. Vilys.

The happy highlights of the end of the morning event were a large bouquet of blue and yellow balloons released into the sunlit sky and the tasting of a cake decorated with accents of the colors of the European Union.
