On Sunday, the officers of the Kalvarija border checkpoint of the VSAT Varėna border team, who carried out the prevention and control of illegal migration, stopped a truck with a semi-trailer that had just entered from Poland on the road Suvalkai-Marijampolė near the village of Salaperaugis (Kalvarija municipality).

A 59-year-old resident of Alytus was driving a Lithuanian-registered heavy-duty tractor loaded with three passenger cars. During the control, the driver provided the VSAT officers with perfect documents for the truck and semi-trailer. However, while checking the documents of transported cars, the border guards became interested in 2017. shows the Land Rover identification code (VIN) of the SUV registered in Austria. It turned out that an attempt was made to disguise the real VIN of the car under the metal plate attached to the car’s windshield.

It did not take long for the VSAT officers to find out that the SUV was allegedly stolen in Germany – a search for it on January 24. announced by the police of that country.

A pre-trial investigation has been launched in the Varėna border district regarding the acquisition or sale of property obtained through criminal means. The strictest punishment provided by law for this crime is imprisonment for up to six years.

The driver was questioned as a witness and later released. All-terrain vehicle “Land Rover” is kept at Kalvarija border checkpoint.

In less than three months of this year, VSAT officials detained 26 suspected stolen motor vehicles, 19 of which were passenger cars.
